Overall Success
Sherman's ruthlesness and willingness to do everything within his means to win the war have contributed to his military acclaim. His leadership and stamina as well as his acceptance of the chain of command aided in his good reputation. Although he did destroy many homes in his famous march to the sea, he did so with the greater cause in mind. His efforts helped distract Lee's army, allowing Grant to moved forward with purpose.
