Ambrose Burnside
"It is not death therefor that is burdensome, but the fear of death".
Overall Success
Known better for his distinctive facial hair than his military prestige, Ambrose Burnside was a tentative leader. Uncomfortable as a commander, Burnside turned down several promotions, choosing to hang back and let others take charge. Burnside showed no extraordinary leadership skills, and was largely unsuccessful in motivating his men. He possessed the necessary organizational skills that might have made him a great leader, but failed to follow through with the other important factors. Besides this, Burnsides tactical decisions were often misguided and led to the deaths of many men. His management of his troops was sorely lacking.
