Overall SuccessThroughout the war, Forrest demonstrated his immense skill as a strategist and commander. He showed an aptitude for tactics, earning himself the nickname The Wizard of the Saddle. Forrest gained acclaim, but was not given as much responsibility as he should have had. Not utilizing his talents was a major set back to the Confederate cause. Although he was not formally trained at a military institute, Forrest's initiative proved him to be an innovative leader as shown in his many doctrines that he created for mobile forces.
