Robert E. Lee
"It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it".
Overall Success
While ultimately unsuccessful in his war efforts, Robert E. Lee was an inspirational leader. His cunning battle tactics and bright strategies helped him even the playing field between his forces and the overwhelming forces of the Union. No matter what his principles, it is clear that General Lee was an astounding military figure. He challenged a bigger and stronger north, enabling his followers to act with courage. Lee manipulated his surroundings to prolong many battles, allowing his forces to wear down the Union armies. Lee is typically cast as a misguided leader who fought for a doomed cause. However, it is important to see that everything he did was in the service of his men. Lee, a truly great general, made the best of each situation, even going as far as to back down with grace at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
