Overall SuccessGeneral Custer's career during the Civil War is not marked by stunning victories or valiant battles. Instead, he is known as a courageous man who followed orders and did what he could for his country. He was not a particularly charismatic man, nor was he beloved by the men he commanded. Custer's knowledge of battle strategy was not a extensive as that of other generals. Despite all this, George Armstrong Custer is one of he best remembered Union generals of the Civil War era. Unlike many others, he was not flamboyant on a large scale. His recklessness was noted, but it was committed on a much smaller level. Because of this, he led his men with precision and avoided any major catastrophes. Although it might be better to have a general who takes risks and gets results, there is something to be said for basic competence.
